Sometimes others or even we try to act like we’re bound to the same cycle that has come before us. We feel chained and obligated to continue whatever it is we’ve been exposed to, like it’s our destiny, we can’t change, we’re going to stay and/or become what those before us became/were.
How many times have we heard or maybe even said, “We always turn into our parents”, “It’s just how I was raised”?
It is made out to be that we are helpless to the live a repeat life and become a clone of those before us.
Bullshit, bullshit, BULLSHIT.
Here’s why I don’t believe in this sort of “collectivist” mindset when it comes to our genetics, ancestry, etc.
Alright… for any triggery people. I do believe that we have certain genetics that are passed down.. but that’s not what I’m talking about and we all know that.
What I’m talking about is someone’s individual character. We all have the choice to make a stand and change the cycle we were brought up in. We are not bound to a life of those who were before us. We are not helpless to decisions others have made before us. We have the power… we are entitled to our own happiness and to take the steps to achieve that for ourselves.
I absolutely hate when people say,
Oh, you’ll turn into your parents. You have no control over it, we all do.
I know without a doubt that I will not turn into my parents or anyone I don’t want to turn into. To give a little bit of a back story… The cycle I would be bound to would be a cycle of abuse, alcoholism and eventually a slow and agonizing death. No, I’m not being over dramatic about it, those are just the facts. I grew up with abuse from a very young age, an alcoholic father, and a mother, who was a good hearted person, but was so beaten down it eventually killed her and who’s life up until a certain point was eerily similar to my own. I almost fell into the cycle. When I was twenty, I almost married a man who would have continued that horrible lifestyle, that vicious cycle that I was raised in. I was alone, with no support, but somewhere I found this inner strength, fire, faith… I broke free of it and vowed that I would never be like that. I looked at my past, at the lives of my parents and family and saw a good example of what I did not want to be. I vowed to not become or be with an alcoholic. I vowed not to become a woman who was beat down to the point of giving up in life. It would stop at me.
We are not our parents, our family, our past, our genetics. We are individuals with power, with value! Our minds are our most powerful asset, because our mindset has the power to redirect our future. We can only find strength in ourselves. We can break the cycle. Never let anyone make you believe otherwise. We can find power, strength and lessons in the Darkness that builds our character.
If you don’t give up, eventually you will break the cycle and you will overcome any obstacle. – Lyoto Machida
