Make a wish… throw a coin into the fountain…
Catch a shooting star in the sky on a clear night… close your eyes and make a wish…
If we wish it hard enough it will happen.
We can wish in one hand and… well… you know.
It’s hard not to pick that dandelion, make a wish, see each one of those (are they still petals at that point or seeds with wings?) get caught in the wind and hope each one of those seeds with wings carry your wish into the sky, hoping the universe will receive at least one of them. Or seeing a shooting star while watching a clear night sky and believe that star was meant for you so it can carry your wish to make it come true someday. There are countless superstitions we hold tight when it comes to wishes.
I loathe the word wish.
Yes, I still grab that dandelion, take a deep breathe and blow my wish into the wind. But really… that’s all I’m doing… blowing wishes in the wind.
One day I was having a conversation and started saying, “I wish…” and then I stopped and blurted out, “I really hate the word wish.” It just feels so empty. It’s just me saying that I want something to be or have been a certain way but, there’s no action behind it. It’s just me hoping that somehow, without me putting in any effort, things will change and magically be the way I want them to be. It just hit me and made me a little angry at how often I use the word. How often I’m just hoping things will be different. How much time and energy I’ve wasted with just the word wish.
The word wish has absolutely no action behind it. Wishing for something won’t change your life, definitely won’t change your past. It gets you nowhere in life. Throwing a coin in the well makes us feel better, like we’re achieving something somehow. We put all of our hopes into that one little wish, thinking our job is done and if it’s meant to be it will be. If it doesn’t happen, we can continue wishing or just give up and say, “Well, I guess it wasn’t meant to be.” If we’re just relying on a wish, can we really just chalk it up to fate or what’s meant to be? I mean, we didn’t even really try… we just left fate up to a hollow word.
If we want something, we need to take action. We need to be responsible for our own lives and fate. Yes, some things don’t work out, they just weren’t meant to be but, wouldn’t we be more at peace knowing that we tried instead of just wishing for it? Maybe instead of saying “I wish…”, we should say “I want…” We can make a call to action from that. We want ________, how do we make that happen?
Having dreams and goals is great. It’s what keeps us motivated. But with that we need progress to stay alive, to stay focused. Let’s stop filling our lives with hollow words and dreams. Let’s take action and responsibility for our lives, our dream, our goals… our value.
